So I just got back from SiemReap, Cambodia.
Saw the temples...went to the bars. It was fun!
So tips for Siem Reap:
1 a. The passport/visa control line at the airport took over 1 hour to get through. How do you speed this up? Easy - if you have 3 days before departure, apply for an eVisa (only $5 USD more expensive) http://evisa.mfaic.gov.kh/index.php.
1 b. If you don't have three days there are still a few things you can do. Arrive with a photograph (not necessary but will speed things up a little) and have $20 USD cash.
2. Want a great Tuk Tuk driver? His name is Hanthou and he can be reached on 012785591. He speaks passable English and chargers what most Tuk Tuk drivers charge for the day: $12. If you go far pay him extra for the gas...we gave him a $10 tip as he really went out of his way for us and spent most of the day on the uncomfortable bike and he seemed very happy.
3. According to the CDC, there IS malaria around Angkor Vat so if you have the time get some anti malaria pills. If you don't then at least pick up some Malarone in a pharmacy in Siem Reap it's only $1.25 and you'll only use it if you get sick...but better safe than sorry- either way go to the emergency room if you come down with flu like symptoms!
4. Even though they have their own currency EVERYTHING is paid for in USD! 1 USD ~ 4000 KR...so if something is 50 cents you might get 2000 KR as change. The ATMs give you cash in USD.
Hotels:
I liked the hotel I stayed in: Shinta Mani (http://www.shintamani.com/) it was $80 USD/night for a double + 12% tax (not including breakfast). It has a pool, a spa, is very clean, has AC, large room with CNN & HBO, a fridge, and a safe. The hotel serves as a school to teach Cambodians how to work in a hotel which made the service great in my opinion as they all try their best.
Some friends stayed in a hotel on top of an English pub. This was more central and was cheap at $25/night for a single (might be the same for a double) - King sized beds, AC, own bathroom with shower but otherwise pretty spartan.
I won't comment on sights and things to do as all guide books cover this.
